How to Keep Slack Status Active Automatically

To keep Slack active, leave its desktop app running on an awake computer with ongoing mouse or keyboard activity. Lumous supplies that input automatically, so you can keep the green dot without returning to the mouse every few minutes. If you manually set yourself away, switch back to active before starting.

Reading a long document, working from a second computer, or taking a break from the keyboard can leave Slack showing you as away. Keeping the desktop active lets you stop interrupting what you are doing just to reset the indicator.

Why Slack Changes from Active to Away

Slack's availability guide says it marks you away after 10 minutes of desktop inactivity. That is why simply leaving the Slack window open may not be enough: the computer also needs ongoing activity.

Lumous addresses that inactivity by generating mouse movement and keyboard input on your computer. For a straightforward setup, use the Slack desktop app on Windows or Mac and keep the session awake, unlocked, and connected.

Our extended desktop testing runs Lumous's mouse and keyboard activity through unattended sessions, alongside scrolling and app changes. The published testing overview shows how we check the resulting activity record. The Slack setup below uses those same mouse and keyboard modes to keep input running.

Keep Slack Active with Lumous

  • Install and activate Lumous. Follow the Windows setup guide or Mac setup guide for the download and required permissions.
  • Open Slack and check your availability. Click your profile picture in the sidebar. If the menu offers Set yourself as active, select it.
  • Enable Mouse Movement and Keyboard Activity in Lumous. Basic Mode is a quick starting point. Select Silent Keys for keyboard activity without random characters appearing in an open document or message field.
  • Start your Lumous session. Keep Slack signed in, leave the computer awake and unlocked, and keep your internet connection available. When you return, press Ctrl + Shift + K to stop Lumous.

For the green dot, start with mouse and keyboard activity. Add scrolling, clicks, tab changes, or application switching when you also want activity across the rest of your workspace. Safe Click Zones and Click In-Place give you control over where clicks happen; the Lumous feature walkthrough explains those settings.

Keeping Slack Active in a Web Browser

You can also open your Slack workspace in a browser. For a simple Lumous setup, leave the Slack tab selected and the browser window unminimized, set yourself as active, and run mouse and keyboard activity. This gives the web app activity in its own window while your computer stays awake.

A browser can deactivate an unused tab even while the computer stays awake. In Chrome, open Settings → Performance → Always keep these sites active → Add. Choose the open Slack site from Add current sites, then save it. Google documents this setting as a way to prevent tab deactivation.

Keeping the tab loaded and generating activity do different jobs: the browser setting keeps Slack running, and Lumous supplies the input. If you want to leave Slack in the background while using other browser tabs and apps, the desktop-app setup above avoids having to manage Slack's browser tab.

What Set Yourself as Active Actually Does

The profile-menu option is useful when you have manually selected Away. Returning to active lets Slack manage your availability from activity again. Slack's presence documentation distinguishes that automatic state from a manually selected Away state, which takes priority.

For a longer active session, keep input running instead of repeatedly opening the profile menu. Lumous handles that part on the desktop.

Desktop and Phone Availability Work Differently

On a phone, Slack says navigating away from the app or closing it changes your availability to Away. Leaving it installed or signed in does not work like an active desktop session. If you want to keep Slack active while using your phone for something else, run Slack and Lumous on your computer.

An awake utility can help keep that computer from sleeping, but the mouse and keyboard activity is what addresses the desktop inactivity timer. You can leave the availability setup running while you focus on another screen or task.

Slack Availability Questions

Do I need to send messages to keep Slack active?

No. The desktop setup uses mouse and keyboard activity; it does not require posting messages or repeatedly typing into a Slack conversation. Silent Keys lets Lumous generate keyboard activity without filling the message box with random text.

Can I keep Slack active on a Mac?

Yes. Run Slack's desktop app and the appropriate Lumous version for your Mac. Lumous provides Apple Silicon and Intel downloads; grant the input permissions during setup, then enable the activity modes you want.

Can I keep Slack active with my laptop closed?

The computer needs to remain awake and the desktop session needs to keep running. Closing a laptop often puts it to sleep, so leaving the lid open is the simplest setup. If you use a docked laptop with an external display, check that your docked setup keeps the session running.
