How to Keep Microsoft Teams Status Active Automatically

To keep Teams active, keep your computer awake and unlocked with ongoing mouse or keyboard activity. Lumous automates that desktop activity so you can stop nudging the mouse to avoid Away. If you use Teams in a browser, also enable its setting for recognizing activity outside the Teams tab.

Reading a long document, working from another computer, or stepping away from the keyboard can turn your Teams indicator yellow. If you want to stay available without constantly returning to the mouse, the practical solution is to keep desktop activity running in the background.

Why Teams Changes Your Status

Microsoft's presence documentation says desktop presence changes to Away after inactivity or when the computer locks. Sleep can make it Offline. Teams also uses call and calendar information to show statuses such as Busy or In a meeting.

That explains why an activity tool can keep Teams Available: ongoing input addresses the inactivity trigger. Lumous supplies mouse movement and keyboard activity automatically, removing the need to keep doing it yourself.

Mouse and keyboard activity also form part of our routine extended desktop testing. We run Lumous through unattended sessions and review the activity it produces, including input counts and the surrounding desktop record. Our testing overview covers that work; the Teams setup here uses the same activity modes to address inactivity.

Keep Teams Active with Lumous

Lumous runs on Windows and macOS. For a straightforward Teams setup:

  • Install and activate Lumous. Use the Windows setup guide or Mac setup guide for the download, license, and permissions steps.
  • Open Teams and select Available. If you previously selected Appear away or Appear offline, reset that choice first.
  • Enable Mouse Movement and Keyboard Activity. Basic Mode gives you a quick starting point. Silent Keys generates keyboard activity without typing random characters into the foreground app.
  • Start the Lumous session. Leave Teams signed in and your computer awake and unlocked for the period you want to remain available. For Teams on the web, enable the presence permission described below.

For availability alone, start with mouse and keyboard activity. Lumous also includes scrolling, clicks, browser-tab changes, and application switching when you want activity across a broader workspace. The feature walkthrough shows those controls and how to start and stop a session.

Fix Teams Web Presence Outside the Tab

In Teams on the web, open Settings → Notifications and activity → Presence. Enable Keep my current status when I'm active outside of Teams on the web, then choose Allow when the browser asks for activity permission. Microsoft documents this in its status settings guide.

This lets Teams recognize activity elsewhere on the computer while its tab stays in the background. It is useful both when you are working in other apps and when Lumous is keeping the desktop active. If you previously blocked the prompt, revisit the browser's site permissions for Teams and allow activity detection.

Can You Set Available for a Fixed Duration?

Microsoft does not offer the Duration option for Available. You can set a reset time for other statuses, but that does not replace desktop activity. See Microsoft's status-duration instructions.

For an ongoing green status, use an active desktop session instead of repeatedly resetting the indicator. Lumous handles the input while you leave Teams running.

Sleep Prevention, Mouse Movement, and Teams Presence

An awake utility handles power management. PowerToys Awake on Windows and KeepingYouAwake on Mac prevent sleep without generating mouse or keyboard input. They are useful for long downloads, renders, and presentations.

For Teams availability, ongoing input is the extra piece. A mouse mover supplies movement; Lumous combines it with keyboard activity and optional activity in your other apps. That makes Lumous a convenient choice when you want the desktop to remain active as well as awake.

Quick Fixes if Teams Still Shows Away

Keep More Than Teams Active

Teams is often just one part of the setup. You may also want movement between documents, browser tabs, and desktop apps, or activity while a separate time tracker runs. Lumous brings those modes together with adjustable activity levels, Safe Click Zones, Click In-Place, and Silent Keys.

All modes are included at $5 monthly or $48 annually.
