Upwork Time Tracker monitoring guide

How does the Upwork Time Tracker record activity?

A sourced explanation of Work Diary screenshots, 10-minute activity segments, memos, manual time, idle behavior, employee controls, and the evidence behind “trick Upwork tracker” searches.

How Upwork Time Tracker monitoring works

Upwork's Work Diary is a billing record for hourly contracts, not just an online-status indicator. Auto-tracked time is paired with work-in-progress screenshots, memos or activity tags, and a green activity meter for each 10-minute billing segment.

The activity meter shows how many minutes in a segment included activity and provides minute-level totals for mouse clicks, scroll actions, and keystrokes. Upwork says it does not record the content typed or the exact item clicked.

The Desktop App can stop tracking after a period without keyboard or mouse activity. Upwork documents client-approved manual time for work that is poorly represented by input, such as calls, thinking, meetings, or sketching. Manual time contains no activity data and is not covered by Hourly Payment Protection.

What Upwork Time Tracker can record

Random screenshots

The Desktop App generally captures about six screenshots per hour during auto-tracked time and places them in the Work Diary.

Ten-minute activity meter

Green blocks show the number of minutes with activity, with totals for clicks, scroll actions, and keystrokes available in the detailed view.

Memos and activity tags

Freelancers describe the work being performed, giving the client a stated task to compare with screenshots and activity.

Active application or window

Current Upwork help says user activity can include the active application or window name, while inactive applications and a complete app list are not intentionally captured.

Billing and payment protection

Auto-tracked and manual time have different protections. A screenshot deletion also removes the associated activity segment from billable time.

Settings and controls that change the record

The product name alone does not tell you exactly what is being collected. Plan, administrator or client settings, app version, device, and employee permissions can all change what appears.

Recording boundary

Collection follows the freelancer's tracker session

The Desktop App begins logging after the freelancer selects an hourly contract, enters the required memo or activity tag, and starts the tracker. Choosing Stop ends that session; calls or other stretches without input may not be recorded automatically.

Freelancer view or control

Screenshots can be reviewed and removed

A freelancer can enable capture notifications, remove a screenshot before upload, or remove a 10-minute segment later from the current Work Diary. Removing the capture also removes the associated time from billable hours.

Freelancer view or control

A second display and camera snapshots are optional

The freelancer can enable capture of a second monitor in Desktop App settings. Optional camera snapshots are off by default and can only be enabled by the freelancer; removing a camera image does not remove the billable segment.

Freelancer view or control

The current week's diary remains editable until it locks

Freelancers can update memos and activity tags or remove segments during the open billing week. The previous week locks Monday at noon UTC; Upwork says stored Work Diary screenshots are deleted after one year.

Client setting

The client controls manual time and activity tags

A client can allow or disable manual time, create required activity tags, and set the weekly hour limit. Manual entries contain no activity data, are shown separately in the Work Diary, and are not covered by Hourly Payment Protection.

Client view or control

Clients see the diary but cannot rewrite tracked entries

The client can review screenshots, minute-level activity, memos, tags, billable status, and time-zone views. Upwork says clients cannot edit diary entries or freelancer memos, although they can edit client-defined activity tags.

Contract or mode

The Work Diary is specific to hourly tracking

The billing diary and Hourly Protection rules apply to hourly contracts. Desktop tracking can be exposed for fixed-price projects through an advanced preference, but those hours are informational and are not added to profile work-hour totals.

Can a mouse jiggler trick the Upwork tracker?

A moving cursor addresses only one part of Upwork's Work Diary. It does not create or update a memo, select a client activity tag, vary the visible work across screenshots, reproduce the meter's clicks/scrolls/keystrokes mix, or change the rules Upwork applies to Hourly Protection.

The tracker can also stop recording stretches without keyboard or mouse activity. Client-approved manual time exists for offline work such as calls or sketches, but it is shown as manual time with no activity data and does not receive Hourly Protection.

Lumous stays undetectable to the Upwork tracker by producing natural variation across the mouse, keyboard, scrolling, tabs, and foreground applications instead of leaving the mechanical pattern of a cursor-only jiggler.

What simple mouse jigglers miss

  • A jiggler does not create the required memo or select a client-defined activity tag for the segment.
  • Mouse movement alone does not reproduce the mix of clicks, scrolling, and keyboard activity shown by the activity meter.
  • Repeated screenshots of one unchanged window can conflict with an otherwise active meter.
  • Hourly Payment Protection evaluates the Work Diary's tracked-time, memo, activity, and contract evidence—not cursor input alone.

How Lumous approaches the wider desktop record

  • Lumous can coordinate mouse, keyboard, scroll, tab, and application activity across a prepared desktop rather than moving only the cursor.
  • Window-aware switching uses applications the user deliberately left open and unminimized and excludes Lumous itself.
  • Natural variation changes the balance of activity across time instead of trying to fill every minute identically.
  • Basic Mode chooses an overall activity level, while Advanced Mode adjusts mouse, keyboard, click, scroll, tab, and application frequencies separately for different kinds of work.
  • The installed app, icon, and process use the ordinary Reminders identity. Lumous stays minimized and keeps its own window out of the foreground rotation.

Upwork Time Tracker frequently asked questions

How often does Upwork take screenshots?

Upwork says the Desktop App captures about six random screenshots per hour, roughly one per 10-minute billing segment, while auto-tracking is active.

What does the Upwork activity meter count?

It records the minutes with activity and totals for mouse clicks, scroll actions, and keystrokes. Upwork states that it does not record what was clicked or typed.

Does Upwork stop tracking when I am idle?

Upwork says the Desktop App can stop tracking after it detects no keyboard or mouse activity. Calls or offline work may need client-approved manual time to appear in the Work Diary.

Does manual time have Upwork Hourly Payment Protection?

No. Upwork's help center states that manual time requires client permission and is not eligible for Hourly Payment Protection.
